The Music Department is a successful and dynamic department offering a wide range of opportunities for students across the school.

Music lessons at Formby High School follow the National Curriculum and are based around composing, performing and listening.  These are taught through a variety of thematic projects which allow students to discover the elements of music by exploring their own instruments and voices, music technology, world music and music from our own culture, both classical and popular. Our music curriculum is built around a rich and diverse ‘playlist’ of set works, selected to provide a common, shared resource for all students and to help illustrate key musical characteristics and techniques.

Our aim is to offer experiences to students so they can express themselves musically.  We strongly believe music teaches a much wider set of skills including social interaction, group work, problem solving, motor skills, presentation, analysis, a deeper cultural and social understanding.

Students receive an hour of music a week and are encouraged to enter fully into the musical life of the school. Our extensive extra curricular programme is in place to enhance the students experiences. We provide opportunities in vocal and instrumental groups but also music technology and Music Theory. As an ABRSM Centre we offer the opportunity for students to sit their ABRSM Theory Examinations twice a year.

To extend learning, students can opt to study GCSE Music, A Level Music and Music Technology and can also enhance their curriculum with the Trinity Arts Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Our staff are enthusiastic and committed to delivering a high level of support to students.
