SCIENCE – KEY STAGE 3

Spacer

At Key Stage 3, students begin to develop the knowledge, skills, and curiosity that underpin a lifelong understanding of science.  Through a rich and carefully sequenced curriculum, students explore fascinating and relevant ideas that help them make sense of the world around them – and begin to see themselves as scientists.
The curriculum is structured across the three disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, allowing students to build a broad and connected understanding of key scientific concepts.  Over the course of each year, students study six core topics alongside a project-based unit designed to stretch students beyond the confines of the national curriculum.  These project topics give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge, think independently, and develop their investigative and problem-solving skills.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is designed not just around what students learn, but how they learn it.  Practical work, data analysis, graphing, numeracy, and extended scientific writing are embedded throughout every scheme of learning.  These core skills form the backbone of our approach, ensuring students are confident in working scientifically as well as understanding scientific ideas.

Curriculum Map

Assessment is carefully designed to support progress and build confidence. Within each topic, students complete a diagnostic assessment focused on a key area where targeted feedback can have the greatest impact.  This is followed by a summative assessment that evaluates their understanding against our Assessment Related Curriculum Expectations (ACREs).  This approach provides clear, meaningful information for students, teachers and parents – helping everyone to understand current progress and how best to improve.
