DESIGN TECHNOLOGY at Key Stage 3

Design Technology is an inspiring subject where students use their creativity and imagination, the practical skills they develop and the stimulation provided by famous designers to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The subject brings together much of their learning from Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art, and places a particular focus on supporting students understanding of engineering. Students are given the opportunity to research, design, manufacture and evaluate, making use of the 21st Century technology available to them in the workshop. There is a strong emphasis on computer aided design in order to design and manufacture with accuracy. Through Design Technology, students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens, and in learning about famous designers and architects they are able to draw inspiration and apply this to their own work. In accordance with the subject’s aims set out in the National Curriculum, we aim for students at Formby High School to:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

To further students’ expertise in engineering and to prepare them for progression to higher education, apprenticeships or the world of work, students are able to pursue the Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Engineering. Like the Key Stage 4 course, it is assessed using a combination of practical tasks, written assignments and end of unit examinations. Many students opt to study this course alongside A Level courses and it is well recognised and accepted by the nearly all UK universities. In recent years, increasing numbers of students have left Formby High School at the end of Year 13 having studied the Level 3 BTEC course to pursue engineering at university or degree apprenticeships with high profile institutions.
