Each December, our Music Department provides a number of choir performances for the annual Alder Centre Candle Service at Liverpool Cathedral – an event which provides comfort, support and hope for many bereaved parents at a difficult time of year. This year, the service could not be held in the usual way but the hardworking staff at the Alder Centre wanted to still present this non-denominational service for all those affected by the death of a child of any age.
Therefore, the 2020 Alder Centre Candle Service was a ‘virtual services’ live streamed on YouTube with socially distant readings, songs and candle procession in the smaller, more intimate Lady Chapel, where the ‘Light Up a Life’ tree was also illuminated.
We created a special, Covid-guidance friendly ‘miniature choir’ with members of Mundo Afrika, G:Force and department staff who performed two songs – ‘live’ for the first time in nine months – ‘Oceans’ and ‘Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me’. The setting was sensational, the acoustics perfect and it was all captures on film by Adlib Audio Visual.
As part of our annual support for the amazing work of the Alder Centre, our Music Department team have spearheaded another virtual choir project. This special recording brings together singers from across the school and community, with voices from our school choirs, our G:Force Gospel Choir, the Wigan Voices and the Alder Centre. Originally recorded by British singer songwriter Julia Fordham in the 90’s, we feel this track is a reflective and hopeful celebration of the invaluable work undertaken by the staff at the Alder Centre.
