This year we are celebrating the ‘Year of Reading’ at FHS, encouraging students to read as widely as possible, enriching their imaginations and their potential in school. A number of keen readers in Year 7-9 participate in the ‘Multi Genre Literature’ project where they are required to stretch and challenge themselves beyond their years and explore a variety of texts. At the end of last term they gathered in the new school Library to celebrate their creative work. Mr Mackenzie and Mrs Hughes were very impressed with the quality of the innovative projects the students have completed. They have devoted hours of their own time to reading some very advanced novels including: Rebecca, Oliver Twist, Wuthering Heights, I Capture the Castle and The Hobbit. Others explored a very diverse range of titles from Star Wars to The 39 Steps. Many students were awarded the bronze star for completing three independent tasks, and Callum (Year 8) received his gold award for an outstanding project on Star Wars. Young people in a world filled with technology are very often labelled as non-readers, it is so encouraging to see our young people enjoying books and reading…well done!
