Enrichment

We are very proud to offer a rich and diverse extra-curricular programme which is designed to support students to achieve more than just academic success. We aim to develop young adults who are not only well qualified but, more importantly, are well- informed, articulate, caring and thoughtful citizens. We have recently initiated our FHSBACC programme which is endorsed by the University of Liverpool and seeks to recognise and reward academic achievement and commitment to enrichment activities across two years. As part of this, students in Year 12 and 13 have a timetabled enrichment session on alternate Wednesday afternoons that is designed to develop a range of skills and provide a broad experience. Students can opt to enrol on one of the following specialist enrichment programmes at the start of the school year.

Independent Study

All students are offered the means to make good use of time outside lessons for independent study. Facilities include two multi- media study areas (equipped with over 50 PCs) and there is Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the Sixth Form Centre. Students are expected to make effective use of independent study time. They will be set homework by their subject teachers, have regular assessments for which they should revise and will also be expected to spend time revisiting and reviewing material taught during lessons and reading more widely around the subjects studied. To support this, one day each week is an independent study day where students are not required to be in school. This will be a Friday for Year 12 and a Monday in Year 13.

Free Time

Students in Sixth Form are given a greater degree of independence. They are able to make use of the Common Room and have a coffee bar that offers hot and cold drinks, light meals and snacks from before school until early afternoon each day.

Preparation for Higher Education and other Post-18 Pathways

The school places a great deal of emphasis on preparing students for life after school. Priority is given to providing students with appropriate advice to help them to make the right choices. This includes guidance on the UCAS university application process and relevant support for those students who choose to follow alternative pathways, including employment, apprenticeship or Art Foundation.

Each year, many Formby High School students successfully take up places at the country’s most prestigious universities. Those students who have very high attainment at GCSE and aspire to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities or intend to submit an application to study courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science will be given specific support and guidance through our
‘High Flyers’ programme. Opportunities will be provided in Sixth Form that will enhance their university application. Workshops by Oxbridge Admissions Tutors, mentoring by alumni of the school, conferences and links with academics all support this process, and students feel very well-prepared and informed as they complete their application for higher education.

The school places particular importance on ensuring our students are prepared for professional life after Sixth Form. An ongoing programme of careers advice and guidance is offered to students and includes initiatives such as Careers Experience week, where students are encouraged to establish links with employers and arrange placements to enable them to gain valuable vocational experience and insight. Particularly popular with students are our ‘Meet the Professionals’ workshops, where they are given the opportunity to ask questions of and receive advice directly from experts in a wide variety of professions.
