Welcome to FHS Sixth Form

 

I am delighted that you are interested in joining Formby High School Sixth Form. Choosing the right place for your post 16 study is an important decision and I hope that you will find the contents of this prospectus both informative and helpful in reaching that decision. I also encourage you to take the opportunity to experience Formby High Sixth Form via the events we will be holding over the coming weeks and months. This will enable you to meet our staff and students and appreciate the facilities and resources we offer. It will also give you a personal taste of the warm welcome and atmosphere for which Formby High School Sixth Form is known.

We currently have a Sixth Form of over 250 students, many of whom have been at Formby High School since the start of Year 7. In recent years, the number of students joining us at the beginning of Year 12, having completed their GCSEs at other schools, has grown considerably. Sixth Form students at Formby High School do not get lost in the crowd. We pride ourselves on the level of care and support we provide to every individual and take time to get to know each student’s interests, needs and aspirations. This uniquely personal approach is a major factor in many students choosing Formby High School Sixth Form over the larger colleges.

Obviously, the curriculum offer is vital. Students are able to choose from a range of academic and vocational qualifications. There are different pathways to follow and in the region of 20 A Level and five BTEC courses are offered. The minimum entry requirements for each pathway and those required to study each subject are contained within the prospectus pack. Unlike many post-16 providers, we do allow students to choose a combination of A Level and BTEC courses.

Students leave Formby High School with excellent A Level and BTEC results and this happens for a number of reasons. Firstly, they receive high quality teaching in all subjects. In addition, they are set challenging targets and are rigorously monitored against these targets. Where concerns exist about individual student progress, the pastoral team, led by the Director of Sixth Form and the Sixth Form Progress Leaders, work closely with students to provide the necessary support to get them back on track. Finally, a comprehensive programme of careers advice is delivered to all students to enable them to make the right choices regarding post-18 progression. Students applying to university are guided through the UCAS application process and those who wish to follow alternative pathways, including employment or higher apprenticeship, also receive appropriate advice.

The school is proud of its A Level and BTEC results. In 2017, 54% of A Levels were graded A*-B and 89% of BTEC qualifications were graded Distinction* or Distinction. These results are excellent and testament to the hard-working nature of the students, commitment of their teachers and excellent relationships that underpin the success of the school. Each year, a significant number of students progress to the country’s best universities to pursue a variety of courses from Medicine to Mathematics and Engineering to English Literature. In recent years we have also seen several students secure fantastic apprenticeships with major corporations.

In addition to A Level and BTEC study, the school offers students many exciting opportunities, including the chance to complete the nationally recognised Extended Project Qualification (worth the equivalent of an AS Level), participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, pursue courses that are delivered in partnership with higher education providers such as ‘Tomorrow’s Teachers’ and ‘It’s All in the Mind: Introduction to Psychology’, and represent the school in a wide range of sports and the performing arts.

We want the best for every student who joins our Sixth Form and will work in partnership with you and your parents to achieve this. We have high expectations and find that students rise to the challenge and make the Formby High School Sixth Form experience a positive one.
