Physical Education (PE) at Formby High School

PE is a vital element in a comprehensive, well-balanced curriculum and can be a major contributing factor in the development of an individual in all aspects of life: physical, emotional, mental and social.  Our aims are to educate students so that they make healthy lifestyle choices, for students to enjoy taking part in broad range of physical activities, and for them to have the confidence to continue to take part in exercise outside of school.  Our exciting and wide-ranging PE curriculum and extra-curricular programmes inspire students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.  They provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.  Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, perseverance, fairness and respect.

PE allows students to develop their practical performance and cognitive skills through decision making in practical situations and analysis of performance. Students are also be encouraged to be creative and develop their leadership skills through a wide range of activities, and in Year 9 students can opt to complete an accredited Sports Leaders qualification.  Our ethos is very much about ‘sport for all’, encouraging all students to participate and try out new sports from our extensive list.  Alongside this, through the ‘Sporting Stars’ programme, we also seek to challenge and inspire our most able sports players to excel in their chosen activity and learn to cope with the demands of elite sport.

In addition to General PE at Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) and Health, Fitness and Well-Being at Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), students have the opportunity to study PE as an academic subject with OCR GCSE Physical Education offered to students in Years 10 and 11 and OCR A level Physical Education and Pearson BTEC Sport Level 3 available for students to choose in Sixth Form.

PE Kit / Missed Lessons

  • If a student is unable to do PE, they should bring in a note and they will still be expected to get changed and take on another role in the lesson, for example coach, scorer, referee. If they are unable to get changed, this also needs to be on the note.
  • If a student forgets their kit they will be provided with spare kit to wear for the lesson and they will receive a kit mark. If there is a genuine reason why a student does not have the correct kit, a note should be provided. Again, they will be provided with spare kit so they can take part in the lesson.
  • Please note, that students should wear white sports ankle socks for all activities, unless they are wearing shin pads. If they are wearing shin pads they then wear football socks.
  • Students who bring the correct kit all year will be issued with reward points.
