FHS is a language rich school.
What is your linguistic capital?
We are very proud of our students’ languages success at both GCSE and A level and of the top grades achieved in language degrees by our ex-students. In addition to academic support, our students are guided in culture and world affairs right from the very start of their language learning path.
At Formby High School you are taught by specialist multi-lingual teachers as well as having access to online learning platforms and e-textbooks. We enjoy strong links with many local universities and the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and as a result of these links students across the school have had opportunities to attend taster sessions in languages such as Korean, Italian, Portuguese and Mandarin and A Level students have benefitted from taster lectures and extra language sessions with native speakers.
French and Spanish are at the heart of our Modern Languages provision at Formby High School; however, students who have an additional language background have the opportunity, where suitable, to gain accreditation in their additional language at GCSE or A Level as part of our ‘Polyglots’ programme. Over 40 students have done so already in languages such as Turkish, Polish, Italian, German and Russian. Some students have followed the spirit of the Polyglots and taught themselves a new language such as Japanese from scratch in their own time – and even gone on to degree level!
It begins with a few words and phrases and that small investment can grow into a lifetime of interest, employment and opportunity.”
John Worne (British Council)
The benefits of speaking a second (or even third) language are enormous. Scientists have proved that learning a new language is a great work-out for the brain because it involves problem-solving, memory skills and communication. A proficiency in Modern Languages can lead to careers in a wide variety of sectors such as politics, tourism, journalism, international business, or international humanitarian aid and can open doors to working abroad in whichever industry a student may choose.
Our key question is always ‘Where will your languages take you?’
