The opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is a fundamental part of the Formby High School ethos. Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to complete the Bronze scheme whilst Silver is completed in Year 10 and Gold during Years 12 and 13.
The aim is to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development for young people which is of the highest quality and the widest reach. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an award for personal achievement that can be obtained by anyone aged 14 to 25 and can take anywhere between one and four years to complete, depending on the route taken.
Mr Rigby, our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Coordinator, says: “By encouraging students to accept the challenge of the DofE award, I feel that we are giving them opportunities to develop many life skills, which are greatly valued by employers and further education institutions. Students who start the awards at 14 years of age, develop into mature, self-confident and adventurous team players, who accept and relish challenges. A Gold DofE Award recipient really does stand out from the crowd!”
The award encourages the following disciplines, which help to shape them as students, citizens and future professionals:
- Working as part of a team
- Improving problem-solving skills
- Developing leadership skills
- Working independently
- Acquisition of new hobbies and skills
- Adopting a healthy lifestyle
- Giving time to the service of others.
Whilst Mr Rigby will oversee the school based elements of the Award, we have enlisted the services of A to Z Expeditions (www.azexpeditions.com) and the Youth and Community Partnership (YCP) (www.the-ycp.co.uk) as external providers to deliver the expedition elements of the awards. AtoZ will undertake the Bronze Award expeditions and YCP will manage both the Silver and Gold Award expeditions.
